NORWAY — In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Community Lunch, a program of the Oxford Hills Area Association of Churches, Community Lunch volunteers, past and present, are invited to a potluck luncheon at noon Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the First Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St.
“The OHAAC Board of Trustees unanimously agrees that the most fitting way to celebrate 30 years of delicious free hot lunches served weekly at Community Lunch is to honor the volunteers who cooked and served those lunches,” said Marilyn Hammond, OHAAC president.Volunteers (past and present) may contact the Rev. Fayre Stephenson, OHAAC secretary, 207-744-2068, for information.
Stephenson said the hope is that many Community Lunch volunteers will attend the potluck lunch.
“This luncheon will be a true celebration of the Community Lunch volunteers’ dedication and a wonderful opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to them,” Stephenson said.
Public community lunches will resume, after a two-and-a-half-year layoff, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at First Universalist Church of Norway.
The first Community Lunch was served on March 4, 1992, at the church. The founders of Community Lunch were adamant that the fellowship inherent in dining in community is as important as the food being served. Since that first lunch, hot meals were served every Wednesday until spring of 2020, when the lunches were suspended. Since April 2020, volunteers, under the direction of OHAAC Treasurer Faylene McKeen, have staffed a roadside food bank every Wednesday.
