HEBRON – Laura Brown, director of operations at Poland Spring Co., recently spoke to the Hebron Historical Society on the history of the company.
Brown has been associated with the Poland Spring Co. since she was a child, and provided extensive detail about the company’s history.
The company’s history dates back to the late eighteenth century, when the Hiram Ricker family operated stage line lodging on the property. In 1845, Ricker discovered a spring, with water that had an outstanding taste and seeming healing properties. From that, the bottling business grew and gained worldwide recognition.
In 1904, Poland Spring water won the grand prize at the St Louis Fair. The company also displays the Maine State Building from the 1893 Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago, on site, where there is also a museum, chapel, hotels, a golf course and one of the largest bottling plants in America.
With a mansion house and other lodgings on the property, the Poland Spring resort became a destination for presidents, celebrities and famous sports figures from around the world.
