AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Humane Society has announced the formal launch of a new colorable storybook, “Just ONE Litter!” This book was written and illustrated by Leane Morin, a professional children’s book illustrator and member of the KVHS board of directors.
With support and input from Project Manager Kim Nixon, the Education Committee, and local teachers and parents, Morin designed this educational storybook in the form of a very detailed coloring book. The story revolves around one kitten at a shelter and shows, through pictures and text, how one unneutered cat can literally produce thousands of potentially homeless kittens. The underlying message is a social issue. Many people are unaware of the extent of the homeless animal population across the nation and the need for spay/neuter programs.
This project was made possible by a grant from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, which fully funded the first phase. The objective of the project is education. The mission is to help educate kids about the importance of spay/neuter. The initial goal, over the next few months, is to introduce this educational tool into every 4th grade classroom in Kennebec County. The book will be available for sale for the first time at this weekend’s Mutt Strut, at the Augusta YMCA, Saturday May 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. All of the proceeds from any sales will go directly to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society.
“It’s so thrilling to see this colorable story book come to life. It’s not just a story, but a powerful message that’s so important to both children and adults. Our hope is that through education we can continue to reduce the number of unwanted litters of cats and dogs and also keep community animals healthier, said Hillary Roberts, KVHS executive director. “‘Just ONE Litter!’ will help shape a new generation of animal lovers through children in Kennebec County, and KVHS couldn’t be prouder to be leading this effort.”
Roberts went on to say the launch of the book will include book sale opportunities for everyone interested at the Mutt Strut; events to celebrate the book and mobilize it via social media are ongoing.
The Kennebec Valley Humane Society provides food, shelter, medical care, and a second chance for nearly 2,000 animals every year from 22 local communities.
