Hobbs Library Speaker series Sept. 19, 22 events set

LOVELL – The Hobbs Library Speaker Series welcomes Marine Mammals of Maine for a family-friendly Zoom presentation on a seal’s journey on Thursday, Sept. 22.
The 6:30 p.m. Zoom-only Marine Mammals of Maine will take participants through a seal’s journey from stranding to release, and all of the obstacles in between. Starting with seal basics such as whether it’s normal for them to be out of the water and why babies might be seen on their own. It will cover when and why seals may need human help.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, Larissa Malone, a professor at the University of Southern Maine, will discuss Critical Race Theory in Education. The in-person discussion will be at 6 p.m. at the library, 227 Main St.
Malone will guide the audience through the fundamental elements of CRT and the guiding constructs that shape its core, namely the permanence of racism, interest convergence, racial realism, the critique of liberalism, whiteness as property, and the power of counter-stories. The topic is approached with the premise that culture is critical to human agency and race is a relevant, salient, and undeniable influence upon educational policies and practices. The historical, political and social dominance of white supremacy is also directly discussed to understand the critical role race plays in schools today.
