AUBURN — At just 13 years old, a local cheerleader is looking at what might be the trip of a lifetime.
Meghan Webster this summer attended National Cheerleading Association camp at Husson University in Bangor and won the Top American Cheerleading award. She has been selected to represent Varsity Spirit — a global leader in cheerleading, dance team and band apparel, camps and competition — in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the country’s involvement in World War II.
“Cheering has been a part of my life since I could walk,” she acknowledged, currently cheering competitively for the Auburn Wreckers — a program designed for new and experienced cheerleaders through the Auburn Recreation Department — under coach Crystal Kirk.
Additionally, Kristi Logan has coached her daughter and been her personal cheerleader “every step of the way,” Meghan noted. “She was also a cheerleader, and it’s always been a passion of hers. She would teach me cheers as a toddler, and I absolutely fell in love with cheering.”
Cheering is a “family commitment,” Meghan said. “My younger sister Alexis cheers with me, my twin sister Carlee cheers us on in the crowd, and I plan to continue cheering with Poland High School.”[Text Wrapping Break]
Cheerleaders and dancers invited to perform in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade are part of a select group of All-Americans identified at Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country. All-Americans are based on superior cheerleading or dance skills as well as leadership skills.
The theme of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade is “Remembering our past while celebrating that once bitter enemies can become friends and allies.” [Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]The purpose of the parade is to honor and pay respect to the Pearl Harbor survivors, veterans, active duty military and their families. The parade takes place each year in Hawaii on Dec.7 — the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.
Meghan will perform with Varsity Spirit All-Americans in an exclusive performance prior to the opening ceremony of the parade, and then be a part of the parade before thousands of fans lining the streets of Waikiki Beach. Besides being able to perform, athletes will have the opportunity to meet cheerleaders and dancers from across the nation and enjoy a memorable trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship.
“I’m most looking forward to meeting other All Americans who are just as dedicated as I am, and making forever friendships with cheerleaders from all over the United States,” she said. “Being part of the parade and walking along side our nation’s heroes and performing for them is a honor in itself. I’m really excited to see with my own two eyes where the attack on Pearl Harbor happened, and learn more about the history of Pearl Harbor.”
