AUBURN — The Pleasant Street Drop-in Center is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Located at the First Universalist Church, 169 Pleasant St., this low-barrier day shelter for unhoused individual provides a safe and quiet space, snacks, toiletries, clothing and camping gear.
Healthy lunches are served both days. The center’s volunteers work hard to provide support and connections for folks who are unhoused and for those whose housing situation is unstable.
Opened as a warming shelter in February, the center has grown considerably over the past five months, and servies more than 20 guests a day. Support for the center has come from Davinci’s Restaurant, Poland Spring Bottling and other individual community donations.
Plans for the fall and winter include increasing hours to help ensure guests have the opportunity to be warm and dry during the day. To do this, additional volunteers willing to participate in an initial two-hour training and then work once or twice a month on a floor team are needed.
