NORWAY — An exhibit featuring paintings inspired by Maine artist Duncan E. Slade, including a major original, “Early Spring Fore Street (1990)” by Slade himself, will open June 2 as part of this year’s Norway Arts Festival.
The festival, sponsored by the Western Maine Art Group and Norway Downtown, is themed “Celebrating Duncan E. Slade,” and will include a silent auction of work by local artists inspired by Slade. The exhibit will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Matolcsy Art Center, 480 Main St.
The exhibit will also be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, when bids can also be submitted.
The closing party and announcement of the winners will be from 4 to 6 p.m., when the winners of this year’s Western Maine Art Group’s Lajos Matolcsy Memorial Scholarship and two scholarships honoring Slade will also be presented. Festival organizers said that they are grateful for the support of Slade’s family, including his son, Duncan W. Slade, and his wife, Gayle J. Fraas, both artists from Edgecomb, and Duncan’s daughter, social worker Diane Slade, of Napa, Calif.
The family has donated the painting that will be auctioned to support both a $500 scholarship for an Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School senior to pursue arts education, as well as the festival itself.
