STRATTON — Dead River Area Historical Society’s annual Sam O. White Day will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the society, on Main Street.
The event will be hosted by White’s distant cousin Emerson Dyer.
White was born and raised on Eustis Ridge and, after serving in World War I, moved to Alaska, where he became the world’s first bush pilot/game warden in the world.
White did a good job of documenting his life, sending pictures, newspaper clippings and other documents back to the people in Maine he loved. His family is now sharing that memorabila with the public, and it will be housed in the historical society.
The society’s special days are not presentations, but gatherings of people knowledgeable about the featured subject. Those who attend will learn a lot by just listening to these folks talk to each other.
The Dead River Area Historical Society is usually open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekend in July and August. A lack of volunteers this year means it may be open only on special days.
Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
