WINTHROP – The Winthrop Maine Historical Society’s July presentation will be a discussion of Tappan Stock Farm on Mount Pisgah Road.
The meeting is free and open to the public, and is at 6 p.m., 107 Main St.
Speakers Kathy Tappan and Natalie Weise have many memories of the farm, owned by Tappan’s grandfather. Weise’s grandfather, Raymond Riley, managed the farm for Tappan.
Kathy’s grandfather, Charles H. Tappan, raised American Guernsey Cows on the farm. Around 1913, Riley moved with his wife and two daughters from Attleboro, Mass., to run the farm. Riley milked cows and sold the milk to Drews Dairy, grew apples in the orchards and helped train harness racing horses. One of the many cows born on the farm was a calf named Bertha who was born on March 5, 1920, to a father named Tappan’s Governor of Winthrop and a mother named Grée according to the records of The American Guernsey Cattle Club. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kathy’s father, Graham Tappan, and her uncle Charles Tappan ran the farm and raised chickens for eggs and some animals.
“Camp Tappan among the pines” was part of the farm property, and to get to camp on Wilson Pond, you had to drive through the farm.
