HIRAM – John Babin, of the Maine Historical Society, will be the guest of the Great Ossipee Museum of Hiram Historical Society on Sunday, June 12.
Babin will speak about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s association with Maine and his inspiration for the poem “Hiawatha” from visits to his war-hero grandfather’s home in Hiram – Wadsworth Hall – and other Maine influences.
The 2 p.m. talk is free and open to the public, and will be held on the ground floor of the museum, 20 Historical Ridge Road. The museum is wheelchair-accessible. The talk will be preceded by a 1:30 p.m. business meeting, at which the Hubert Clemons Award for Outstanding Service to the town of Hiram will be awarded.
Longfellow was the celestial celebrity of his day. He achieved worldwide fame and traveled the globe. He taught at Harvard College and lived in Cambridge, Mass., but was born in Portland and always considered Maine his home.
