Free workshop on food waste recycling is June 21 in Auburn

AUBURN – An in-person free workshop focusing on the most up-to-date information on local food waste recycling initiatives will be held on Tuesday, June 21, at the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, 125 Manley Road.
The workshop is sponsored by The Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions at the University of Maine in collaboration with the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection and Maine Dept. of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry.
It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The workshop will provide participants with information on local food waste recycling initiatives and local consolidated food scrap collection and management as an alternative to disposal in landfills. Discussion will focus on developing tools to help communities promote “higher and better uses” for collected organics, along with providing a pathway for successful initiation of food scrap recovery programs. Strategies learned will allow communities to reduce overall disposal costs, decrease reliance on disposal in landfills, improve community health and enhance local soil health and vitality.
