WINTHROP – The Winthrop Maine Historical Society is hosting a rug-hooking presentation, as well as a fundraiser featuring a tour of the historic Viles home in Augusta in June.
Rug hooking was quite popular in colonial New England, where scraps of cloth were plentiful in the cottages. Today it’s considered a fine art. Lynda Pratt, of Winthrop, will share her love for rug hooking with the community from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main St.
Pratt’s love of rug-hooking began with private lessons, then expanded to day, weekend, and week-long rug hooking retreats. She earned a five-year certificate from a week-long retreat, where she took classes from McGowan National Guild teachers, learning different techniques and history of rug hooking. A display of rugs that show a variety of themes to hook will be displayed throughout the center exhibit room.
On June 11, the historical society will host tours of the historic Elsie and William Viles home, 71 Stone St., Augusta. The Greek Revival house, also known as the Gov. Samuel Cony House, was built in 1846 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building and grounds have been restored by the Elsie and William Viles Foundation. The historical society is offering the tours as a fundraiser to for the ongoing renovation of the History Center.
Tours will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. and will include refreshments. Tours are limited to 30 people each.
