TURNER – This year marks the 12th year of the Turner gazebo, and the weekly Music for Mavis concert series, which will continue into September.
The gazebo and live weekly music in Turner for everyone was the dream of the late Mavis Leavitt Varney, for whom the series is named.
The opening of the series, originally scheduled for May 17, is now Tuesday, May 10, with Stan Davis added to the schedule.
The enthusiasm and participation of community spirit for all the events at the gazebo throughout the year showcase the vision Varney had for the gazebo when she first envisioned it, said her daughter, Paula Anderson.
“Music melodies and lyrics often rouse our senses as we reminisce of day’s gone by, or more recent,” said Dick Thibodeau, gazebo committee member, in 2018. “How those melodies stir our emotions! It was once stated, ‘Sometimes, it’s not the song that makes you emotional, it’s the people and things that come to mind when you hear it.’” Thibodeau died in 2020, but his words will live on as the gazebo continues to be a community centerpiece.
The Music for Mavis mission statement is “To build stronger community connections in a rural population by providing access to music and the performing arts.”
As it ages, the gazebo needs continued maintenance. It now has a new cupola ventilating the building. The board is looking to upgrade the lighting, clean and paint, and address other minor repairs. The maintenance costs are an additional expense and go beyond what summertime receipts allow. To find out how to help, contact Anderson at paulamillayhill@gmail.com
Shows are at 6:30 p.m. at the gazebo, in front of Leavitt Institute, 98 Matthews Way.
Concerts are free, but a hat is passed to support the musicians. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.
