FARMINGTON – The annual Farmington Earth Day Volunteer Cleanup is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, April 22, with prizes in a variety of categories.
“Invest in our Planet” is the international theme for this year’s Earth Day, which is the 52nd anniversary. Volunteers are invited to invest in the health of our part of the planet and pick up litter, particularly potentially harmful plastics around the streets, parks, river, streams and trails of Farmington.
Categories for prizes are:
Happiest Cleanup Volunteer Group or Family
Oddest Litter Found
Most Adventurous Litter Retrieval
Youngest Volunteer
Most Litter Picked Up by an Individual
Most Litter Picked up by a Group or Team
To compete in a category, volunteers should submit a photo of their activity to this year’s organizer, Jessica Casey, director of the Farmington Public Library, at director@farmingtonlibrarymaine.org. Be sure to include the name or names of those in the photo and category being entered.
Casey will also be available to answer questions before and during the cleanup, and can take photos if volunteers need help with that.
Downtown businesses have donated prizes, including:
$25 gift certificate from Main Street Nutrition
Two $25 gift certificates from Reny’s
$20 gift certificate from Twice Sold Tales
Two large gourmet chocolates from Wicked Good Candies
A pound of coffee and travel mug from Dunkin Donuts
Princess hand puppet from Minikins
Moose droppings earrings and balsam soy candle from The Mercantile
Those interested in taking part should meet 1 to 3 p.m. at 204 Main St., the Pierce House. Bags and gloves will be provided.
The event is open to any person or group who cares about the environment and our town.
Aside from removing plastic pollution and other litter, other ways to celebrate Earth Day range from preparing a garden for planting, starting a compost pile, starting seedlings inside, even discovering new ways to upcycle.
The library is also sponsoring a container garden for young people this year.
Anyone who would like to participate April 22, but can’t make the time or location may do what they can, when and where they can. The town Public Works Department can be contacted to pick up bags in your area at 207-778-2191.
