Winthrop Maine Historical Society May 12 topic to be town’s early settlers

WINTHROP — Since discovering that a distant cousin, Jonathan Whiting, had a hand in establishing Winthrop, historian Mike Bell has been on the trail. It is a story that resonated in his love for colonial history, and it connected with others in the family tree.
Bell will be the guest speaker of the Winthrop Maine Historical Society at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main St. A zoom link is also available at https://networkmaine.zoom.us/j/81096636540. Meeting ID: 810 9663 6540.
Bell traces the town’s history back to the 1790 map that included 156 lots granted to the early settlers of Winthrop by the proprietors of the Kennebec Purchase from the late colony of New-Plymouth.
An instructor at University of Maine at Augusta Senior College, Bell has spoken to civic and educational groups across the country.
