AUGUSTA – A recognition and wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in Capitol Park to honor the service of Maine’s Vietnam veterans.
The event will be held rain or shine at the park, across State Street from the Maine State House, and is open to the public.
The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans and Emergency Management, and Gov. Janet Mills are hosting the event.
“Each of Maine’s Vietnam-era veterans made a sacrifice with their service; some of them with their lives and even others that we still search for today. For those that made it home and for those that didn’t; on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we join to properly honor their service,” MBVS Director David Richmond said.
Guest speakers are Maj. David Hassan, who served in both the Maine and Florida National Guard and, after transitioning to active-duty Army, served in Army Aviation in Vietnam from May 1968 to May 1969. He is joined by Silver Star-recipient CCM Ron Brodeur, a gunner and crew chief who served with the Green Hornets. The two will reflect on their Vietnam service and speak about the importance of fellow veterans to be connected to the VA for their health care.
The Maine State Police Pipe and Drum Unit will also be in attendance to provide music during the ceremony. The unit comprises members of law enforcement from the Maine State Police and Biddeford Police as well as civilian members.
