BRIDGTON — Visitors to the computer lab at Bridgton Public Library will now also get to enjoy works by area artists in the Yellow Wall Art Gallery.
The exhibit space, sponsored by the Friends of Bridgton Public Library, is in the computer lab on the upper floor of the library, and offers area artists an opportunity to display their work to the public on a quarterly basis as well as beautify the library’s computer lab.
“We realized lots of empty wall space in the lovely light filled room now housing the computer lab upstairs, after moving the children’s room back downstairs,” said Karen Dean, a Friends member and art exhibit project coordinator.
Artwork from three area artists will be displayed through June 30. William L. Janelle has two woodcuts on display. Janelle, a self-taught sculptor, takes away from a single block of wood with hand tools, often leaving tool marks behind as a sort of fingerprint. Drew and Margaret Sanborn, of Cat’s Eye Images, have four photographs (two by each artist) of the still visible images of Maine on display. Jane Whitworth, of Whitworth Textiles, has a large silk quilt on display. Whitworth enjoys creating beauty for the home using much-lived and timeless fabrics.
The space is open during regular library hours and the public is invited to visit and browse.
Artists interested in featuring artwork in an upcoming quarterly exhibit may submit an application to the Friends of the Bridgton Public Library Art Exhibit project coordinator. Applications can be found at the library or online at the library’s website, www.bridgtonlibrary.org/artexhibit.
Once submitted, art pieces will be reviewed by the Art Exhibit Project Committee, which will make recommendations to the library director, who makes the final decision on what to display. Criteria used to evaluate appropriateness of artwork are local interest, vitality and originality, historical or artistic significance, number of pieces, and availability of space.
Pieces will be rotated on a quarterly basis and as space permits. “We hope this new art exhibit project will be appreciated by library patrons and artists alike and we encourage the public to stop by and let us know what you think”, said Amy Stone, library director.
