AUBURN — Energy bubbled just under the surface for a not-so-well-kept secret, as the Red Eddies took the court Jan. 28 for a cross-over matchup against Scarborough High School.
Spectators, family and friends, sports enthusiasts and passionate basketball fans knew Edward Little High School’s John Shea was about to reach the often elusive milestone of 1,000 career points before his hometown crowd. At the tip-off, he needed six; two free throws and a layup later, the final two points stood in the way and kept fans electrified.
Nearing the end of the first quarter, on a feed from point guard Eli St. Laurent, Shea drove end line in front of the visitor’s bench. The crowd held its collective breath until the ball dropped sweetly through the net.
A resounding “Johnnnnnn Sheaaaaa!” erupted from announcer Bim Gibson, and surrounded by on-floor mates — Landon Cougle, Marshall Adams, Conor Burtchell and St. Laurent — Shea made his way to head coach Mike Adams for a handshake and a hug. Shea finished the night with 19, as EL went on to a 65-39 victory.
Shea joins the elite eight at Edward Little, matching former 1,000-plus point scorers. Gibson has kept track of them all, posting this information on his and the Edward Little Boys Basketball Facebook pages:
According to Gibson’s research, members of the ELHS 1000 Club are Tammy Paradie (1993), Carolyn Brown (1997), Britney French (2007), Troy Barnies (2007), Kirsten Prue (2010), Ashlee Arnold (2013), Wol Maiwen (2019) and John Shea (2022).
Shea, a senior, is the son of Chris and Bridget Bazinet Shea, both graduates of ELHS, where Chris was also a basketball standout.
