AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Historical Society’s February Facebook Live presentation will be “Rediscovering Rachel Field – The extraordinary book journey that led to ‘The Field House.’ ”
The presentation will be live at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, on the KHS Facebook page and will also be available to watch after that. Those with questions for the presenter may submit it in comments during the live presentation.
Rachel Field was a National Book award winner, Newbery Medal winner, and rising writer-celebrity in Hollywood when she died mysteriously in 1942 at 47. In 1992, writer Robin Clifford Wood bought Field’s former summer house on a Maine island. Wood became enchanted by Field and launched a quest to discover the secrets in her forgotten story. Wood wrote “The Field House: A Writer’s Life Lost and Found on an Island in Maine,” a hybrid of biography and memoir, published in May 2021.
Wood will tell the story of her book journey and her connection with Field. In addition to sharing scenic and historic photos, Wood will play an audio recording of Field’s voice from a vintage radio show. Questions and conversation are encouraged.
