ELLSWORTH – Lake George Regional Park in Canaan was one of 14 organizations to get a Maine Community Foundation Conservation for All grant recently.
Other organizations in the Turner Publishing circulation area to get grants under the program were Gorham Outdoors, Greater Lovell Land Trust and Western Foothills Land Trust.
Lake George Corp., which oversees the park in Skowhegan and Canaan, was awarded $15,000 to help with its plans to build a themed playground and forest trail, incorporating a donated sailboat and an existing building to serve as a lighthouse.
The money will help to repair and improve water drainage for the playground. The playground, designed to encourage both imagination and healthy activity for preschool-age children, is expected to be complete by the fall 2022, depending on future funding.
The park partners and collaborates with community organizations including Somerset Public Health, Redington Fairview General Hospital, the Outdoor Sports Institute, Skowhegan Parks and Recreation and Skowhegan Outdoors (Main Street Skowhegan).
Other grants to area organizers were:
Gorham Outdoors, $7,500 to buy equipment that will help maintain trails.
Greater Lovell Land Trust, $6,000 to help expand engagement with communities and enhance public access opportunities to meet the growing demand in western Maine.
Western Foothills Land Trust, $5,000 for improved four-season access at Hawk Mountain in Waterford, including kiosk and preserve signs, bush hogging of trailer corridors, boulders and trail counters.
The Conservation for All grant program invests in organizations and projects that build strong connections between people in Maine and its land and water. The fund offers general operating support to conservation organizations and flexible program support for other organizations doing conservation work.
