AUBURN — “Shrek the Musical” is coming to Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre in August, but audition opportunities are already here.
Directors John Blanchette and Christopher Hodgkin have been preparing to conduct adult auditions set for Friday and Sunday, May 26 and 28, at 6 p.m. at CLT’s stage, the former Great Falls School, 30 Academy St.
The kids-only audition will be Sunday, May 28, at 1 p.m. Call backs, if needed, will be Monday, May 29, at 6 p.m. There will be three parts to the audition — vocal, choreography and dialogue. Participation in all three parts is a must to be cast in a role! Just a note for parents of younger potential cast members: There is a bit of crude (immature) humor in this production. There is no swearing, but there is some innuendo and a small amount of crass language.
The cast of characters is large, and this show presents a great opportunity for actors to shine. The directors are looking for people to play larger than life. “These are fairy tale characters, and we want them played big!” they noted. “We are looking for accent work (Shrek) and/or interesting comic voices to enhance the fairy tale feeling. Steve Barter is music director, Lacey Moise will choreograph, and Brandon Chaloux is producer.
Anyone intending to audition should prepare a verse and a chorus of a song in the style of the show; an accompanist will be provided. The Shrek score will be available for those wanting to sing a song from the show. If you are singing a song from another show, you are responsible for providing your own sheet music. No prerecorded or a cappella music will be accepted. Music auditions will be closed. Time will be allotted for changing into appropriate dance attire for the choreography section. Dance or jazz shoes are suggested, but not required. Please, no jeans or open-toed shoes.
The production calls for a huge cast. Roles include Shrek, Lord Farquaad, Fiona, Donkey, Dragon, Pinocchio, Gingy, Young Fiona, Teen Fiona and Ogre parents. Many additional roles, adding to the importance and flow of the story, comprise the ensemble.
A brief synopsis of the popular musical can be summed up this way: “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…. and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero, who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess resisting her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and more than a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek!”
