SWEDEN — Board members and friends of the Sweden Food Pantry recently gleaned 250 pounds of apples from Pietree Orchards for use at the food pantry.
Volunteers gathered the afternoon of Nov. 2 to do the work, including Executive Director Linda Bradley, board members Miriam Gibely and Nancy Michaud, and friends of the food pantry Dell Foss and Susan Ware.
“These women were fantastic,” Bradley said. “We picked 250 pounds of Cortlands, Bonkers and Crimpson Crisp. Thank you, Pietree. It was a beautiful day for apple picking. By the next day, there was a frost.”
Gleaning is the practice of gathering fruit or vegetables that are left once an orchard or farmer has harvested a crop. The apples were very well received at the pantry when they were made available to the public, organizers said.
The Sweden Food Pantry serves the towns of Sweden, Lovell, Fryeburg, Stow, Stoneham and Waterford. No eligible individual or family is turned away, no matter where they’re from. Larger families from Bridgton make up 25-30 percent of the pantry’s clients.
The pantry is open to the community from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month. It’s at 137 Bridgton Road in the basement of Sweden Community Church, near Sweden’s Four Corners (intersection of Route 93 and Waterford Road).
