NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine has changed the name and meeting day for the men’s cancer support group that has been meeting at the center.
The group, hosted by Vance Jordan and Nel Bernard, is now the Men’s Rally Group and will meet 4 to 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. The first meeting, which will be an informational meeting for those interested in particpating in the group, will be on Tuesday, May 23, at the center, at 199 Main St.
Jordan and Bernard will be available to meet men coping with cancer and their spouses or caregivers, and will answer questions and seek advice from those attending about what their needs are. Bernard, a licensed massage therapist, will also offer chair massages. No appointment is necessary and plus light snacks will be provided. The mission of the Men’s Rally Group is to provide moral and spiritual support and companionship to men affected by cancer and all caregivers coping with cancer diagnosis of family members.
A cancer diagnosis can be shocking, frightening, disorienting, and lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness. Jordan and Bernard want cancer patients and caregivers to know that they don’t have to deal with this alone, said a news release from the center.
The group is a time for individuals to talk about what they are going through, seek answers for what to do next, or just experience a couple of hours of relief from the tension and worry of living with cancer. An example of topics covered in monthly sessions include tips for caring for oneself during treatment, strategies caregivers may use for taking care of oneself as well as the patient and learning some gentle exercises to help participants regain stamina and core strength. Checkers, Chess, Backgammon, Scrabble, Cribbage, and card games are also available.
