BRIDGTON — Alanna Doughty of Lakes Environmental Association and Mike Davis of the Bridgton Historical Society shared a wealth of knowledge with the 17 participants who joined the Stevens Brook Trail History Walk on Thursday, Oct. 21. The event is the first in new partnership between the LEA, historical society and Bridgton-Lake Region Rotary Club focusing on the Stevens Brook Trail.
The trail is rich with history, and the walk focused on the mills from the Pondicherry Woolen Mill at the Food City site to the Smith Sash Furniture and Coffins Factory on Smith Avenue. Participants in the walk were from Waterford, Sweden and Bridgton. Newcomers and folks with a history of family members working in the mills participated and shared stories.
When Rotarian Carol Madsen, who chairs the club environmental committee, asked Kerry Cushing and Davis of the historical society if they’d like to explore how the organizations could work together, they jumped at the opportunity to collaborate to bring the historic trail more into the public eye.
Representatives of LEA, BHS, Rotary and possibly other groups plan to meet soon to explore how a partnership might be formed and what the collaboration would like to achieve over the next few years.
