BRIDGTON – The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity will close its 2021 season at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9,
Until it closes, the museum, at 121 Main St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The museum follows all COVID-19 protocols, including current occupancy limitations and mask mandates
In addition to the museum’s collection of folk-art murals and inventions by Rufus Porter (1792-1884), a featured new acquisition of the only known Rufus Porter wooden tall clock, circa 1834, is on display. The timepiece, made by an unidentified cabinetmaker, houses a clockwork mechanism that is attributed to Porter. The clock was bought by the museum from a private owner thanks to support from Jim and Beth Cossey.
Celebrating Maine’s Bicentennial and 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage in Maine and Beyond are two special 2021 exhibits that will close on Oct. 9.
The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity promotes and preserves the life and legacy of Porter. Today, he is recognized for his folk art; however, he was much more than a painter. Porter was also an inventor, a musician, and a founding publisher, editor and writer for Scientific American, still in publication today.
Children under15 and under are admitted free to the museum, and there is no charge to visit the gift shop. For more information, visit rufusportermuseum.org.
