LEWISTON — The city held a ribbon-cutting at the new North Temple Fire Station on Sept. 4.
The ceremony at the station, at 55 North Temple St., included remarks by Mayor Mark Cayer and Fire Chief Brian Stockdale. A cornerstone plaque presentation was made by the Grand Lodge of Masons of Maine Grand Master Richard M. Nadeau and accompanying lodge officers.
The station replaces the Sabattus Street station, which was built in 1947. The new 9,192-square-foot station features increased garage space to better house fire apparatus, modern gym area for firefighter physical fitness, training areas, and designated gear and equipment decontamination and cleaning areas.
“This station has been a long time coming,” Cayer said. “The 1947 station previously used was clearly not built for the needs of the 21st century, and it is reassuring to know that fire personnel at the new facility will have the resources and space to prepare and best respond to those in need.”
Stockdale said the building is a welcome change from the Sabattus Street station, “which was very worn.”
“This facility will better serve both our residents and our firefighters as we continue to provide public safety into the future,” he said.
