TURNER — Looking for some local entertainment, an evening celebrating the arts and an opportunity to eat delicious ice cream? Then come to Arts Night Tuesday, May 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Turner Elementary School on Route 117. This fun-filled evening has been planned to appeal to all ages.
The band “Some Assembly Required,” featuring veteran Maine musicians Kathleen McGee, Stacey Jacobsohn, Bill Stone and Stan Davis, will perform all evening at the Turner Center Gazebo. Their repertoire features a wide range of family-friendly music from jazz standards to classic rock to folk music to originals. Their music includes beautiful vocal harmony and danceable rhythms. Bring along a chair or a blanket and relax or dance along to the music.
Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause truck will be parked outside providing free ice cream. Voluntary donations will benefit an artist in residence program for Turner Elementary School. Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause was designed as a fun way to give back to local communities and causes. The truck attends local events to give out ice cream for free, in exchange for voluntary donations to benefit the cause or charity. Since 2012, the truck has raised more than $222,000 for over 1,000 local causes.
There will be lots to see and do inside the school as well. The hallways will be turned into a museum, with art exhibited from all students in grades three to six. The work showcases their yearlong efforts and will include drawings, paintings and sculptures.
Some sixth grade students will be demonstrating a variety of arts and offer face painting while chalk-drawing will be happening on the pavement outside. Fifth grade will have an exhibit of covered wagons along with reports and displays on the Westward Expansion.
Third grade students will showcase their “tiny houses,” incorporating math concepts, and fourth grade students will be presenting their Maine lighthouses with a Lighting of the Lighthouses ceremony at 6 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., students will provide musical performances in the library area. Students will have a chance to play their instruments, either solo or with others, in a recital-like program.
