STRATTON – The Dead River Area Historical Society will hold its annual Ice Cream Social from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, and Sunday, Sept. 5 at the society, 180 Main St.
The special of the day will be brownie a la mode, served by historical society volunteers. Charlie Bruce and Peter Farnsworth will provide live music. This year is also Stratton’s bicentennial, so the music will be from 150 years ago.
The event is free and open the public. Money raised will go to the society’s handicap bathroom project.
The museum itself will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days, as it is on every weekend in August as well. Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
The society’s 2022 pictorial calendars are also now available. The cover features “School Kids, Flagstaff School, 1948.” And the interior photos are from schoolhouses, postcards, farms, camps and other historical photos from the area. The back page of this calendar features a paragraph about each photograph.
The calendars are available at Pine’s Market, Fotter’s Market, T&L Enterprisees and, Flagstaff General Store, and can also be bought by sending $8, plus $2 for postage for each calendar to Dead River Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 15, Stratton, Maine 04982.
