AUGUSTA — Area students spoke about “What does it mean to be a hero?” in the Kennebec County Modern Woodmen of America civic oration contest on April 25.
Those competing in the county-wide event had already won first, second or third place in their local-level contests.
Kyle Douin, an eighth-grade student from St. Michael School in Augusta, placed first in the county round, winning $50 and a trophy. St. Michael School will also receive an engraved trophy in honor of Kyle’s achievement.
The second-place winner was Carolyn Kinney, a sixth-grade student from Mount Merici Academy in Waterville; the third-place winner was Kameron Douin, a sixth-grade student from St. Michael School. The runner-up was Anna Whitstone, from Winthrop Middle School.
Modern Woodmen’s school speech contest is one of many educational programs the fraternal financial organization offers to schools nationwide, according to a news release. More than 100,000 students compete in the contest each year. Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures.
