READFIELD – The Readfield Historical Society annual Wine & Cheese Social will kick off Readfield Heritage Days at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.
Guests can tour the RHS museum and meet others with like interests. Newly installed windows made possible through donations from RHS members will be unveiled at the event.
Refreshments will include wine, sangria, nonalcoholic beverages, cheese and an array of appetizers and treats. Guests are asked to follow Maine CDC guidelines.
New or established members, whose dues are outstanding, can pay dues at the door: $10 annual, $5 for seniors and lifetime dues $100.
On Saturday, Aug. 14, six historic site markers will be dedicated at Readfield Corner. Participants can walk along with Dale Potter-Clark from one location to the next or drop in on whichever sites are of most interest. The first sign unveiling, for display at the Readfield Community Library, will occur at 9 a.m. during the library book sale at the Fire Department on Main Street in Readfield Corner.
The second sign will be revealed at the Union Meeting House, 22 Church Road. Meet inside the UMH by 10 a.m. This is also an opportunity to see the historic trompe l’oeil artwork on the interior as well as the stained, rare stenciled windows and other features.
At 11 a.m. at the old Fairgrounds on Church Road, four more signs will be dedicated at two locations three in the parking lot that will cover Readfield Artillery Company militia musters that began in 1812; the Kennebec County Agricultural Fair 1856-1932; the Readfield Grange Fair and the transition to what exists there today 1948-2021. The fourth and last sign of the day will be unveiled on the Upper Fairgrounds Trail at 11:30 a.m. The sign will tell of events that occurred at the rac track that was located there. At that time and place Brandon Fike of Readfield will drive his oxen in a stone-pulling demonstration with granite stones that were actually used for pulling events during the Kennebec County Agricultural and Readfield Grange Fairs. After the oxen stone pulling demonstration teams of kids will be given the opportunity to try pulling some stones themselves, at the ball field.
