Cubs and Scouts from around central Maine took part in demonstrations to honor the U.S. flag on Flag Day, June 14.
Troop 604 Winthrop and Cub Pack 654 Monmouth took part in a flag retirement ceremony at American Legion Post 40 in Winthrop. Augusta Troop 603 members also joined Legion members for their flag retirement ceremony.
In Sidney, Troop 401 held their own flag retirement ceremony. Scouts joined the Elks in Augusta to take part in the opening flag ceremony during their annual Flag Day observance.
In Pittsfield, Scouts joined the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge 2713 of Pittsfield to mark Flag Day 2021.
“Our flag represnts us all, regardless of economic background, religion, where we were born, or our personal beliefs,” said Kennebec Valley District Scouting Chairman Joe Shelton, of China. “Our flag is the symbol we all share and the symbol we all should respect.
Scouting honored the U.S. Flag in 1972 by adding it to all BSA uniforms, the 50-star flag was designed by Scout Robert Heft of Lancaster, Ohio, in 1958, Shelton said. “Teaching good citizenship is a prominent part of Scouting. I am very proud of our Scouts and leaders who took time to teach our young people why we have Flag Day and what Old Glory means to us all.”
