NORWAY — The Western Maine Art Group is hosted a cooperative exhibit in collaboration with the Norway Historical Society and Museum.
The exhibit, “Then and Now” will feature art created by historic area artists such Vivian Milner Akers and Minnie Libby paired with contemporary works by current WMAG artists of the same subject matter. The exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through September.
There will be opening receptions from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 2, at both the Matolcsy Art Center, 480 Main St., and the Norway Historical Society Museum, 471 Main St.
The WMAG was the recipient of a Community Building Grant from the Maine Community Foundation for the exhibit in 2020. The grant, totaling more than $1300, has been put to use on marketing and promotional costs associated with the exhibit. Originally slated for 2020, the exhibit was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and is now scheduled to be on view from July through September.
Contemporary local artists such as Michael Everett, Nikki Millonzi, Barbara Traficonte, and Connie McVey have created works which revisit some of the same locales and themes as were originally painted by the earlier artists. The exhibit highlights how the local area has changed, as well as how the artistic styles have changed over the decades.
A booklet of Ekphrastic poetry has been created in honor of the exhibit, featuring poems contributed by local poets such as Lisa Moore and Nancy Shaefer. Ekphrastic poetry is inspired by a work of art. The illustrated booklet will be on sale at the exhibit.
