BRIDGTON – The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity in Bridgton has received two grants that will allow 25 qualifying Bridgton-area children to attend Camp Invention this summer.
Camp Invention, which takes place at Stevens Brook Elementary School July 12-16, is a program run by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The Brick & Beam Society, a giving circle within The United Way of Greater Portland, and The Agnes M. Lindsay Trust provided the grants for the scholarships.
This is the fourth year that the museum has provided scholarships for area children to attend the camp. Camp Invention is a week-long summer camp for children who are going into grades kindergarten through six.
A new curriculum is developed every year with customized activities that are child-centered and focused on creative thinking. This year’s program is designed to build essential STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills while also boosting reading abilities. This is all accomplished through hands-on activities.
Camp Invention is one of the ways that the museum seeks to support the cultural and intellectual life of the Bridgton community, in addition to encouraging the creative inventiveness that Rufus Porter himself sustained throughout his life..
