WINTHROP — The Winthrop Maine Historical Society will host author Douglas Rooks, and Robert Pelletier, who will dicuss significant Franco-American Mainers, from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, via Zoom.
Rooks is the author of “First Franco: Albert Beliveau in Law, Politics and Love,” which describes the rise and career of Beliveau, who was the first Franco-American county attorney in the state when he was elected in 1914. He ran twice for Congress and served on both the Maine Superior Court and the Supreme Judicial Court.
Pelletier, a retired educator and WHS board member, will describe his ongoing research to explore Franco-American families, and their many contributions to Winthrop’s history and economy.
Born in Lewiston, Beliveau lived most of his life in Rumford, attended the University of Maine Law School, then in Bangor, and was an officer in France during World War I. Beliveau was the father of Severin Beliveau, cofounder of Preti Flaherty law firm in Portland, who continues to lobbyist at the State House in Augusta, and in Washington, D.C.
As an energetic county attorney, prosecuting two murder trials at the Oxford County Courthouse in South Paris, and even pursuing a suspect into the North Maine Woods, along the “worst tote road in Maine” above Moosehead Lake and Kokadjo.
Rooks other books are “Statesman: George Mitchell and the Art of the Possible” (Down East Books, 2016) and “Rise, Decline and Renewal: The Democratic Party in Maine” (Hamilton Books, 2018.)
