NORTH ANSON — Carrabec High School biology students welcomed Julie Davenport and Jim Ferrante, of the Maine Forest Service, who gave a presentation on June 8 and 9 at the school.
As well as getting outdoors withe the students and talking about the biology of the forests, the pair described the local forest ecology and the type of work that they do as foresters. Their work involves working with private landowners, logging companies, paper companies and others.
Davenport and Ferrante also talked about the education, training and personal experience that prepared them to do what they do. This was a rich and necessary presentation for the high school students. As the foresters related, there is a great need for people to do this kind of work. There are, and will continue to be, many opportunities for people in this and related fields. It is a chance to stay in Maine, do meaningful work and be outside while you are doing it. What could be better? The students said they’d like to thank Davenport and Ferrante for the visit and information.
It was a meaningful experience for all of us,” said biology teacher Paul Thompson.
