Kennebec Valley Garden Club, Winthrop students collaborate on tree planting

May. 302021

AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Garden Club, in collaboration with Jeff Ladd, principal at Winthrop Elementary School, and Jinny Bryant’s kindergarten class planted an ornamental pear tree on the school grounds May 27 in commemoration of Arbor Day.
The class project topic was carbon sequestration and a celebration of trees. The program was presented by Karen Foster, KVGC chairman of the horticulture committee, along with Pam Johnson and Nancy Voisine.
Foster had the students very actively involved asking questions about the importance of trees to the environment. After the discussion, Foster presented each student a bookmark telling about trees with Hooty Owl.
DR Struck put the tree in place and Robin Struck gave a commentary on that specific tree and its characteristics. Each student, along with Ladd and garden club members, were given a trowel to spread loam around the base and then take home to use. The students were encouraged to care for the tree during their years at the school.
Penny Pray from the Winthrop Historical Society documented the planting.
