Kennebec Savings winning Fitbit team chooses Rail Trail for donation

AUGUSTA — Kennebec Savings Bank employees laced up their sneakers to participate in the Bank’s latest Fitbit Challenge, and the winning team chose the Friends of the Kennebec River Rail Trail as the recipient of the challenge’s donation prize.

The Bank’s Fitbit wellness program began in February 2016 as a creative way to get employees active on a daily basis. Since then, the bank has introduced a series of challenges to keep employees interested and motivated.

During the month of February, nine teams formed with a total of 62 participants.

“This challenge combined two areas that the Bank is passionate about — employee wellness and community giving,” said Kennebec Savings Bank President and CEO Andrew Silsby in a news release. “With a little friendly competition and their passion for giving as motivation, the participants walked more than 17 million steps over 28 days.”

The winning team’s members frequent the Rail Trail and wanted to help maintain its condition so that fellow employees and community members can continue to use it, the release said. The Kennebec River Rail Trail runs 6.5 miles from Augusta to Gardiner, roughly the distance between KSB’s Augusta and Farmingdale branches. Many employees use it year-round during their lunch break and some even hold meetings while walking the trail.

“The multi-community trail is used by thousands of people every week. Some use the trail for physical fitness and others use it for their daily commute to work,” said Dan Albert, president of Friends of the Kennebec River Rail Trail. “The generous donation from Kennebec Savings will be used for the continued maintenance and operations of the Trail.

The bank has offices in Augusta, Waterville, Winthrop and Farmingdale as well as 24-hour electronic banking centers in Manchester, Augusta and Farmingdale. KSB-Ties-Community-Giving-to-Employee-Wellness.pdf
