School supply drive organized by ASTRA

NAPLES — Lake Region High School recently established an ASTRA club. ASTRA is an international community service and leadership organization for young people. The youth group is sponsored by Altrusa International, a non-profit organization for community service. The goal for ASTRA at Lake Region High School is to help the local community and inspire others to do the same.
“I’m proud of the way our students have stepped forward to volunteer in this community. ASTRA will make a difference,” said club sponsor Katie Klein. ASTRA stands for Ability, Service, Training, Responsibility, Achievement. The Lake Region ASTRA club is working to fulfill those duties in a number of different ways. Thus far, the club has volunteered at Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, raised funds for the Freezing for a Reason campaign, and crafted items for Tots Shopping Day. The club also plans to build housing with Habitat for Humanity and volunteer at a Bridgton nursing home.
For its next project, the club has organized a school supply drive for local kids in need. Elementary schools in the Lake Region area need staple items for kids who cannot afford them.
“It is important that we not only recognize the needs of our community and schools within it, but also do something to see that those needs are met,” said ASTRA club president Kennedy Brake. Many students don’t have the resources to buy supplies, so schools try to fill the gaps. The Lake Region ASTRA club hopes to provide schools and needy students with much needed supplies by running a drive in the upcoming weeks.
Markers, crayons, folders, glue and notebooks are among the supplies ASTRA hopes to collect. Multiple locations will host drop boxes for donations. Lake Region High School, the Naples Fire Department, the Naples and Bridgton public libraries and The Fountain of You fitness studio in Naples will have drop boxes throughout May. ASTRA appreciates any community support with helping local kids in need.
