WINTHROP — Peter Nielsen, former Winthrop town manager, will speak on the topic “Why is Local History Important to ME”? at the next meeting of the Winthrop Maine Historical Society.
The event is free and open the public and will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8, via Zoom. The Zoom link is networkmaine.zoom.us/j/81096636540″>networkmaine.zoom.us/j/81096636540 and the meeting ID is 810 9663 6540. A business meeting of the historical society will follow the talk.
Nielsen and his wife, Mary Richards, have lived on the former Winthrop Town Farm for 42 of their 45 married years. Living on the farm has sparked a very personal interest in local history, Nielsen said. His goal in the talk is to encourage listeners to explore their own surroundings to help create historical contents that can enrich their lives. He will share some of what he learned from Richards’ grandfather, who lived on the farm for more than 50 years, after he bought it in the early 1940s. Neilsen will also display some artifacts and discuss themes that persist over the years.
