PARIS — During the 1960’s in the village of South Paris, there was a tradition during the month of May when groups of children and teens would purchase a bright and colorful tissue paper May basket from the local Rexall drug store or from Dignan’s Hardware.
These were purchased for less than a dollar and filled with penny candy from local stores. The group would then walk to a recipient’s house, knock on the door or ring the bell, and simultaneously yell at the top of their lungs — “MAY BASKET!” Then, the group would run. The recipient of the basket would have to catch everyone in the group before he or she could eat the candy, and … they would have to share it.
