SOUTH PARIS — Oxford County 4-H Clubs are sponsoring some virtual events for youth in March and April, including a virtual tour of Acadia National Park and a chance to plant native seeds to help Maine’s environment.
Children in grades kingergarten through fifth grade may join Oxford County 4-H at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, for a Virtual Peep Launching Party. Participants will build popsicle stick catapults and send Peeps for a ride. Harrison Library will join the event to share a story following the activity. From 4 to 4:45, Thursday, April 8, participants can tour Acadia National Park, virtually. An Acadia National Park ranger will provide an overview of the park, teach about natural resources and habitats preserved there, and answer questions about this stunning national treasure. From its rocky shore to the highest mountains along the Atlantic sea, this is a must-see presentation about a unique and well-loved piece of our Maine coast. There will be a native seed planting workshop at 4:30 p.m. on on Tuesday, April 13. One of UMaine Extension’s master gardener volunteers will teach youth about the importance of flowers native to Maine and their relationship with pollinators. Youth will then be guided through the process of planting their own native seeds.
The program is open to youth ages 10 to 18. A zoom link will be provided upon registration. By registering for this event, youth are expected to participate in the workshop, plant the native seeds that will be provided and help Maine increase its native plant population.These seeds require specific preparation upon planting in order to germinate. Two types of native seeds will be provided — New England Asters and Black-eyed Coneflower — as well as two pots, builder sand and soil for planting.
Because of the weight of the soil and the bulk of the pots, supplies should be picked up at the Oxford County Extension Office. Register no later than April 2 at extension.umaine.edu/register/product/native-seed-planting.
