GRAY — The Maine Wildlife Park will kick-off a new exhibit at the Summer Program Days event planned for Saturday, May 6, at the park on Route 26. The exhibit features “Nocturnal Creatures” — critters we seldom see living in darkness. This exhibit is shadowy and unique! Nocturnal creatures are all around and beneath us, but we scarcely notice their existence. Learn the differences between a truly nocturnal vs. “crepuscular” lifestyle and why certain critters are active only at dawn, dusk or completely in darkness.
Although the park does not have a live bat display, there will be a special exhibit and lots of information about Maine bats as well as what biologists and citizen scientists are doing to help protect them. Three bat species have been added recently to Maine’s endangered species list. Free bat posters will be available, too.
There will be a variety of activities for children to participate in between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. So make a plan to visit the wildlife park on the first Saturday in May to learn all about the “Creatures of the Night.”
The Maine Wildlife Park is owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The park exists to promote an understanding and awareness of the wildlife, conservation and habitat protection programs and projects of MDIFW. The park has more than 30 species of native wildlife on display, plus wildlife gardens, nature trails, a fish hatchery and other interactive exhibits and displays. The park is open daily from April 15 through November 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; visitors may then stay until 6 p.m.
Admission to the park is free for ages 3 and under; $5.50 ages 4-12; $7.50 for adults, and $5.50 for seniors. Groups of 15 or more are $3.50 per person. Bring a picnic and spend the day. Family and community season passes are an incredible bargain for families and groups planning visits to the park several times over the course of the summer.
