Town of Minot news

Feb. 12021

* The Selectmen have voted to postpone Town Meeting to either May or June because the current EO only allows 50 people to gather indoors. They feel it is important to try and uphold the traditions of the Town versus holding a referendum. They will make a decision at the April 5 meeting. They are able to postpone the meeting without jeopardizing the budget because of the EO allowing for the Town to carry forward the previous budget figures for the Town ro operate.
* The Selectmen have scheduled the municipal election and referendum for March 12 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Town Office. This is normally held the first Friday in March, but they needed more time to hold a public hearing for the Broadband Question (below). The election includes 2 three-year terms for Selectmen: Lisa Cesare (incumbent) and Matthew Callahan. Daniel Callahan is not running, as well as 2 three-year terms for School Board. Incumbent Michael Downing is running as a write-in. Incumbent Michael Lecasse is not running. Absentee ballots will be available Feb. 10.
* The Broadband Question is authorization to appropriate $100,000 from the Undesignated Fund Balance to serve as a ConnectME Authority Grant Match. Minot is partnering with FirstLight to expand broadband service to underserved portions of Town and will cover about 50% of the residences that currently do not have adequate internet access. The project total is just over $300,000 and will be split three ways between FirstLight, ConnectME, and the Town. The reason the Selectmen moved this to a referendum question, rather than waiting for Town Meeting, is because the funds need to be dedicated by the application deadline in March/April. The Public Hearing for this matter will be held on Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. during the Selectmen’s normal meeting time. Space is limited for in-person attendance but will also be available via Zoom.
More information will be available on minotme.org.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a correction from the original version, which said that Michael Downing was not running for school board.
