BRUNSWICK — Midcoast Senior College’s annual Winter Wisdom lecture series begins Jan. 6, and will be held for free, on Zoom.
The lectures, held on Wednesdays, cover a variety of of topics.
There are two ways to participate. Each speaker’s talk will be pre-recorded and posted on the website for visitors to watch at their leisure, any time, free. Those who would like to watch live and ask questions can do so on the posted date, at 1 p.m. Registration is required for the latter option. Visit midcoastseniorcollege.org and click on Winter Wisdom and look for the link to registration.
Registration is separate for each discussion. Those who register will receive a link to the Zoom event on the morning of the event. Those who are new to Zoom and need assistance may call the senior college at 207-725-4900 or email mscoffice@midcoasteniorcollege.org.

Jan. 6: “Music as a Form of Community in the Time of Covid.” Local songwriter and performer Jud Caswell, who grew up in Morrill, has won national acclaim as “one of the leader singer-songwriters on the current scene” by Sing Out Magazine. He will talk about what themes of contemporary life influence his compositions and will perform songs on his acoustic guitar.
Jan. 13: Universal Basic Income in a Post-Pandemic World. Michael Howard, professor of Philosophy at the University of Maine, will talk about Universal Basic Income, a proposal that would provide a monthly payment to cover basic expenses caused by high unemployment and businesses that have been forced to close. What are the benefits and costs of UBI? Howard has written books on the subject and is national coordinator of the US Basic Income Guarantee Network.
Other courses are “Remembering Topsham,” Jan. 20, “The Viking Raids in Ireland, 790-1000,” Jan. 27; and “The Great White Fleet: Black sailors, unons and racism on the Palmer schooners,” Feb. 3.
