Fifth annual Troy Barnies ‘Summer Slam’ basketball clinic is Aug. 1

AUBURN – The Auburn Recreation Department has announced the fifth annual Troy Barnies “Summer Slam” basketball clinic will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Union Street Park basketball courts (also known as “The Gully”).
This free clinic, which is for boys and girls entering grades three through eight, would typically occur during Auburn’s Summerfest weekend, but due to COVID-19, all Summerfest events were canceled, except for the Baxter Outdoor Trail 5K Run at Mount Apatite and Troy’s Summer Slam Clinic.
This year, Auburn Rec is partnering with TRU Sports to help provide a truly incredible clinic. The focus will be on the basics and fundamentals and the clinic will follow Maine CDC guidelines and requires pre-registration for all participants so we can stay within the state-established 50-person maximum limit.
For those unable to secure a spot in the clinic or who do not feel comfortable participating due to COVID, TRU Sports is offering a FREE basketball “swag” care package. Participants must pre-register for either the clinic or the swag bag (not both). Care packages will be handed out in a drive-up style on the day of the clinic to comply with COVID-19 & social distancing guidelines.

An Auburn native, Barnies is a graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn and was the 2007 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year and Maine’s “Mr. Basketball.” Barnies played Division I basketball for the University of Maine and has spent the past nine years playing pro-level international basketball in Europe. Earlier this summer, Barnies signed with the Lithuanian team, BC Lietkabelis, a high-level basketball team playing in two European leagues, EuroCup (the second best basketball league in Europe) and the LKL (which is the top league in Lithuania).
