BUCKFIELD — The John D Long American Legion Post 58 has two events to report from July.
On Fourth of July, the King’s Arm musket was fired, as it is every year. The musket has been fired every Fourth of July since the Declaration of Independence was signed. The musket was handed down by the descendants of Capt. Josiah Parris, a Revolutioary War soldier from Buckfield, and the family fired it on the Independence Day until they donated it to the Zadoc Long Free Library. since then, the American Legion has fired it every year.
The nonprofit group 222 Cares Food 4vets came to the Post on July 6 with boxes of nonperishable food for any veteran and their family, and 31 veterans were given boxes, some more than one, for their families. For more information about the organization, visit www.222cares.org. The group also made a dropoff at the South Paris American Legion on July 21.
