AUGUSTA — Did you know Rotary International has been leading the fight to eradicate polio worldwide, reducing the number of cases by 99.9 percent since 1988. “The world’s progress in fighting polio might be one of the best kept secrets in global health,” according to Bill Gates, an American business magnate, investor, author and philanthropist.
Join the Augusta Rotary Club April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Lithgow Library’s community room to learn about the fight to end polio; this is a free event open to the public. The evening will feature Ann Lee Hussey, polio survivor and recipient of the White House Champion of Change Award, for her humanitarianism and contributions to public service. Lee has put a face on the subject of polio eradication, winning hearts and minds and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.
As a polio survivor, the story she tells is personal and so is her fight to eradicate polio. Polio mainly affects children under the age of 5, and while there is no cure, it is preventable with a vaccine. Polio remains endemic in only three countries in the world; however, until eradicated, all children remain at risk.
