AUBURN — Good Shepherd Food Bank is accepting applications for a Community Redistribution Fund grant through May 14. The purpose of this grant is to support organizations’ efforts to source and distribute culturally specific and relevant foods to community members in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. This grant is intended for organizations working closely and primarily with BIPOC (Black and Indigenous people and People of Color), immigrant and refugee communities.
“Though Maine does not release racial or ethnic data regarding COVID-19, racial and ethnic data reported by other states show significantly higher death rates for Black and Latinx people than white Americans,” stated Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “We recognize this pandemic is disproportionately affecting people of color, and we are committed to redistributing resources directly to organizations and coalitions committed to meeting the needs of immigrants, refugees, indigenous communities, and communities of color.”
Grant awards are available for up to $10,000, and priority will be given to community-led organizations that are not currently Good Shepherd Food Bank partners, and those led by and primarily serving people of color. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. Thursday, May 14.

Use of grant funds can include but is not limited to, the purchase of food for direct distribution or meal preparation; gift cards/credits to culturally specific markets for community members; food sovereignty projects; transportation; storage; and distribution costs. Up to 10% of grant funds may be used for general operating expenses.
Eligible organizations/projects must be based in Maine and must aim to build food security in the applicant’s community. Grassroots, community-led organizations and coalitions, fiscally-sponsored and collaborative projects are encouraged to apply. Please note that individuals are not eligible to receive grant funds.
