PILLIPS — This year, in addition to its first Saturday-of-the-Month flea markets (beginning June 3 during Welcome to Summer weekend), the Phillips Area Community Center will offer its first-ever “High End” Sale. The event will ask vendors to bring quality items to PACC (no item under $10 for sale) and offer them at prices commensurate with their value. For shoppers, the sale will be a chance to find high end items — and bargains — not normally offered at a flea market.
Vendors will be charged $10 for each eight-foot table or space they require, plus a single $2 charge for the cost of advertising. In addition, PACC will accept individual items (a maximum of three) and sell them for a 10 percent commission. There will be no admission charge for shoppers.
The High End Sale will be held at the community center from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Because that day is the day before Mother’s Day, shoppers may find the perfect gift for mom. Vendors who would like to participate are asked to call Winona Davenport before May 1, at 639-4296 to reserve space. Early spring concerts at PACC
Two concerts are upcoming at the Phillips Area Community Center. The band “Close Enough” will play Saturday, April 22, and Matthew Byrne, Saturday, May 8. Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. with admission for Close Enough at $10 adults and $5 students, and for Matthew Byrne at $15 and $5.

Matthew Byrne is a traditional singer and guitarist from Newfoundland, who has produced three albums of music — “Hearts & Heroes” (2014), “Sing Through the Earth and Skies” (2015), and “Ballads” (2010). His performance in Phillips will be Byrne’s only appearance in Maine.
Historical Society and Library publish newsletters, announce events
In their recent newsletters, Phillips Historical Society, 8 Pleasant St., and Phillips Public Library, 96 Main St., have listed several upcoming events.
The Historical Society’s “season” will begin in May and run through October, with the museum open the first and third Sundays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. Opening day for the 2017 season is Saturday, May 6. Before that, however, the Historical Society will hold a Board of Directors meeting at the museum Wednesday, April 12, at 6 p.m. All members of the society are invited to attend.
The museum will sponsor a field trip to Daggett Rock on Saturday, May 20. Andrea Nurse, paleoecologist at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute will lead the excursion. Participants will meet at the Historical Society Museum, at 1 pm to car pool to Daggett Rock. The group will view glacial landscape features and discuss land use changes since the late 1800’s. The trip is free to PHS members and students, with a $5 requested donation for non-members.
The library’s annual ticket auction sales begin April 5. The sale is next door to the library at The Studio, open Wednesday through Saturday during library hours. The ticket drawing will be held Saturday, May 6. Also on the agenda, A Winnie the Pooh Teddy Bear Picnic will be held at the library Saturday, May 6, starting at 10:30 a.m. Bring your favorite stuffed animal. The picnic will include stories, games, refreshments and a Winnie the Pooh movie.
The library will also hold its annual meeting Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. The meeting is open to the public. For more upcoming events, check out the library’s newsletter, available at the library’s front desk.

Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols will be a guest speaker April 19 at a meeting of the Sandy River Business Association. Sheriff Nichols will address policing issues in the Phillips area. While this is the monthly meeting of the SRBA, the public is invited to attend. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Shadagee Common Room.
