Belgrade to celebrate Memorial Day differently this year

BELGRADE — While veterans’ graves will be adorned with their usual American flags and flowers, there will be no public ceremony at Pine Grove Cemetery on May 25.
The Belgrade Board of Selectpersons at an April 21 meeting (held remotely) agreed the threat that a public gathering could pose to the community’s health necessitates canceling the town’s traditional Memorial Day observance. However, the board assured graves will still be decorated and a wreath hung at the town’s veterans memorial. The selectboard also proposed two new ways of honoring Belgrade’s fallen veterans.
Their names will be posted on the town’s new website, www.townofbelgrade.com, and on its Facebook page, which recently surpassed 700 followers. Additionally, the reading of the veterans’ names, which typically occurs at the Memorial Day ceremony, will be broadcast live on the town’s Facebook page on Monday, May 25. Details will be shared in the coming weeks.
